Funny how so many of my current favorite artists are Canadian. So is Byram Joseph aka Slakah the Beatchild, a highly sought after and awarded performing producer. This Toronto based multitalented musician has produced for many Canadian artists such as Justin Nozuka, Drake, Glenn Lewis, Divine Brown, Ayah, Ebrahim and Melanie Durrant and he was nominated for a Juno award for his work as a producer with artists Shad (make sure you check out my post about Shad!!), Ebrahim & Arabesque. In 2009 he was awarded a Juno award for the Divine Brown album Love Chronicles. He is a member of the hiphop duo Art of Fresh, a solo artist and the creator of The Slakadeliqs.
A recent documentary style EPK peers into the life of Slakah the Beatchild as he talks about his collaborations with various artists. Watching this, you can follow the Beatchild as he goes on a mini tour and writes in the studio. The documentary was produced by Maya Bankovic and Nadia Tan for Six Nine Three.
Soul Movement Vol. 1, his first solo installment, was released in 2008 after he had caught the attention of the the legendary BBE label in Europe (J Dilla, Pete Rock, DJ Jazzy Jeff etc.). The album was internationally critically acclaimed and it is as smooth as it could possibly get. It is very easy to do as Slakah advises in the first track: enjoy yourself. The album is a timeless piece of work and it is no wonder he has been compared to such great names as Raphael Saadiq, Pete Rock and Dwele.
2008 was also the year for the first release of Art of Fresh, Slakah's collaboration with D.O. who happens to hold the Guinness World Record for longest freestyle. Back to the Earth is an interesting mix of house beats and rap, a corageous and experimenting album that had a key role in the development of Slakah's career.
While waiting for the Soul Movement Vol. 2 to come out Slakah has dropped a slew of beat tapes and an EP called Something Forever in 2010. In Slakah's own words Something Forever is "the theme that is forever at the forefront of my mind when I create music. We can easily identify music that has that indescribable timeless vibe, music that regardless of the time period in which it was created sounds refreshing and relevant when played." A special edition of the EP was released later.
The EP is a solid one. Like it was written in Moovmnt.com there are no intros and no outros, just seven great tracks all of which bring something new to the table. Something Forever was definitely one of the better releases in 2010.
Art of Fresh dropped their second album, When the Night Comes In, also in 2010. The artist himself describes the album as energetic and musical, positive and unique feel-good music.
The Beatchild recently formed The Slakadeliqs. Like he said in the documentary The Slakadeliqs present yet another kind of a sound that is inspired by classic rock, reggae and pop and is more acoustic and eclectic than the Beatchild. The highly anticipated Slakadeliqs debut The Other Side of Tomorrow came out in 2011 and according to hiphopcanada.com Slakah has said that it is by far his best work to date. It is nearly impossible to name a genre for the album or find a purchase link for it (I'll keep on searching...).
I'm seriously looking forward to Slakah's forthcoming album Soul Movement Vol. 2. No one except maybe for Slakah himself has any idea of the release date but I'm sure it is worth waiting for. In the mean while you can get to know to his previous stuff mentioned above and, please, let me know if you happen to find links to the last two releases (Art of Fresh and Slakadeliqs). I couldn't find either of them on iTunes (geez I hate living in Finland sometimes) or anywhere else but I guess they might be available on iTunes in Canada and the US at least.
You might also want to check out his Beat Tape Vol. 3 and 4 that were kind of unofficial releases. The links give you preview quality and if you want to buy them in better quality you should email to beatchildmusic.beats@gmail.com.
